How To Exercises For Your Dog

The only moment you start yelling at your puppy are probably like when it turns the carpet you just bought for your living room into its restroom. Well, you should know screaming at your dog will never to the trick, but training, and especially home training will.

Puppies are like kids, they have no idea where to go and what to do, so it is your job to teach them. The more perseverance you show in following the basic procedures of the home training you show, the faster your dog will learn proper behavior. Weeks can go by until you have managed to do it, and will small breeds it can take even longer but the results are worth waiting.
A six months old puppy cannot control its bladder for longer than two hours. So if you must leave the house for more than three or four hours a day, maybe you should think twice before adopting a puppy. You must not give your puppy the chance to get all your home dirty; watch the dog all the time. For a puppy, you would have to pay attention to its need every two or three hours, after every meal and after the puppy has finished playing.
Here are some things you can do:
Check the signs that show you that the dog must eliminate, like when the dog circles around or uses speed to move around. When you do see these signs, put the leash on the dog as soon as possible and get the dog out, or get the dog to the special place you created for that particular purpose. If the dog complies and does his thing at that special place, reward the dog.
Praise the dog every time it takes his need outside, right after the dog finished, not when the dog is back inside. This is an important exercise the dog will do and will know what to expect if it does.
- choose a special place and always take the dog to that particular place, using a leash. Take the dog out for a long walk or allow the dog to play only after it has eliminated.
- if you have to clean the “accidents” that happened in your home, get the rags or the toilet papers you used and leave them in the bathroom, where the dog must defecate in case of emergency. The sense of smell will help the dog identify the area as the right place for that sort of activities.
- while the dog takes his time for his needs, use specific words, easy to remember, that you can repeat when you take him to the place where the dog should be taking care of his needs, in order to remind it of what exactly it has to do over there.

What's The Best Fresh Dog Food

Would you feed your dog food that has road kill in it? We do. We all do. Most commercial dog foods have stuff in them that isn’t fit for a … well, a dog. If we had the time, we’d all get the freshest human-grade ingredients, like high-protein meats and eggs, vitamin-rich vegetables, and whole grains. We’d cook delicious meals, then chill them right away to lock in freshness. Freshpet did just that.

The only preservative they use is your refrigerator. I tested a sample of their Freshpet Select soft cooked meals. The meals come packaged like sausage, ready to slice and serve. I gave it to my geriatric Labrador, whose sensitive stomach can sometimes produce gas that would peel paint. But she never got gas or soft stools with this food. I mixed it in with her regular food (Diamond Lamb & Rice) for a few meals, then gave her the Freshpet alone. She loved the taste and the smell. And with a little hot water, it becomes a warm, comforting meal that puts a spring in an old dog’s step. But it’s not just for older canines. Freshpet is for ANY dog who loves fresh food (and who doesn’t?). They even have puppy formulas. The company says their foods have “simple foods you’ll recognize,” and it’s true. It even smelled good. I’ve never been able to say that about a commercial canned dog food. I didn’t have the quantity of product to keep her on it for long enough to say whether the food had any impact on her energy, health or coat, but she sure did like it.

I also tried their Dog Joy sweet potato treats. The package said, “Ingredients: Sweet potatoes.” Don’tcha just love that? My dogs sure did. Both of them snapped up the dried sweet potatoes like they were covered in gravy. There are about eight treats in the bag. Suitable for medium and large-size dogs (break into pieces for small dogs).

I wish I could carry this food in our store, but we’re not set up to ship refrigerated goods. However, I was so impressed with the food and treats that I’m going to keep my dog on Freshpet Select. Run – do not walk – to their site and take a look at their other food and treats (for cats, too) and find a store near you.

How to Teach Dog To Fetch

Teach Your Dog To Fetch

Just to have some playful time many dogs obey what their owners command and direct them to do. To do this in even better way try to reward your dog just for motivating him to learn more and stick to whatever he learns. For this it is suggested that the owner should work with his dog every day at least for 5 to 10 minutes training or working with him. Try to make his training fun and ending every episode by rewarding him for his job well done. If your tired of it then just leave it and try the same later but don’t ever do it in frustration anyway as it won’t give you any positive results.

Start with the object your dog loves the most when you start teaching your dog to fetch. Control the dog with a comparatively longer bridle and order him to sit down. Take the object and just toss it at a reasonable distance from the dog’s position and give him the command to fetch the object permitting him run after that and grab it. Try to gently draw him back to you once he grabs the tossed object in his mouth. Then by offering him some good treat order him to release the object from his mouth. At this juncture it is rather significant that your dog should give away the object to you quiet willingly obeying your command.

The retrieving breeds would learn this trick faster and may like to play for extended period of time. But some typical breeds may not poise to be so willingly doing it and give up their favorite object, so in that case ensure that they are rewarded energetically through certain expressions of his praise and treats too. Once when the dog brings back to you the tossed object then release his leash permitting him to fetch the object on his own. You can also educate the dog with the names of the different objects and train him advanced.

Once the dog realizes the notion of fetching the object by its name for instance, if you like that the dog fetches you the news paper every morning then educate him by throwing the paper initially for a few days. Give him the command of fetching the paper and you will notice that every morning he brings you the paper for getting rewarded. By laying out 3 or 4 different objects try to give necessary exercise to your dog recognizing the objects by their names and see how smartly he can grasp them by their individual names. Continue such practice repeatedly and while doing so just maintain the pleasant voice and joyful nature. This will enable your dog to understand better and will start fetching all the things precisely that you command.

The 4 P’s comprising of patience, practice, praises and persistence is the basic necessity while you educate your dog for the tricks like fetching. Every correct move made by the dog while learning has to be properly rewarded like treats for encouraging his attitudes. He should realize that you are happy with his performance and love playing him or devoting your time for him. It will make magic.

If You Want The Coat Of Your Dog To Look Like New All The time?

If you want the coat of your dog to look like new all the time, to prevent excessive hair loss, and to keep the dog’s skin healthy, daily carrying for your dog’s fur should become a real pleasure for both you and the dog.

It is good that you start brushing your dog’s fur from the beginning, very gentle and careful, avoiding at the same time pulling healthy hairs, and also avoiding “painful areas” in case your dogs signalizes it has any (in which case you should also find out the cause of the painful arias). If you don’t start by doing the above mentioned, you will end up chasing your dog around the house every time you have to groom the fur, you will also experience trouble with tangled hair, and you will collect piles of dog hair from your carpet.

For starters, you must pick the right tools you need for grooming your dog that must be adapted to the hair type of your dog. In this purpose:

Ordinary dog brush with round endings – you can purchase that from any cosmetic store or supermarket. It suits most hair types; you can use quick short movements, done in the growth direction of the hair.

For short hair type breeds, grooming follows the opposite direction, in order to eliminate soft dead hairs, but you must not forget to brush the hair back to its natural position. For longhaired dogs, you must use the brush deep into the fur, not only on the surface of it.

You need a thick brush (natural or synthetic fiber, similar to the texture of the clothing brush) and this type of brush is a bit harder to find. But you can start in a cosmetic stores only for dogs with short hair, because, even if it leaves the fur nice and shiny it can “electrify” the hair, giving the dog an uncomfortable sensation, which, in time can determine the dog to stop liking it.

Brushing is necessary only in the growth direction of the hair. This type of brush usage is also necessary for uniform application of lanoline, if necessary, after you have bathed the dog.

Special, rectangular brush, with metal endings, though the endings are bended a little (you can usually find that in any pet shop). Due to the metallic texture, you must only very careful use it for brushing shorthaired dogs, because the thin teeth of the brush can harm the dog’s skin. This type of brush is good for longhaired dogs.

The grooming itself must be proceeded with care, gentle movements, and one hair lock at a time, holding each of it tight between the fingers, in order to avoid pulling healthy hairs. Never brush the dog the opposite direction with this type of brush!

Special glove, with a rubber side and soft rubber plasticized teeth, which you can usually find at any pet shop – it is used for massaging the dog’s skin, stimulating blood flow, and also for dead hairs removal.

You must not use this tool for the actual brushing the dog’s fur, but you can use it after the actual grooming with a brush of the type above mentioned.

Comb – regular one (a metallic type round ending comb is recommended). This comb is necessary only for the longhaired dogs, a dense one for soft hair, and a scarce one for rough type of fur, for tangled or easily tangling hair.

Combing the dog is useful after the brushing, in the growth direction of the hair. In order to untangle some “knots”, you should first restrain the “guilty” hair lock between your fingers and carefully comb it.

Scissors – usual ones or special – purchased from a pet shop, paper store or a cosmetic store, is used to remove extra hair and hair locks (fringe, for some breeds like Caniche), excess ear hair, etc.

Why Does Your Dog Lick His Paws?

Dogs are carnivores. Many are fed diets that consist of little meat and an abundance of grains, carbs, fillers…plus chemical preservatives and dyes, rancid fats and just plain garbage. Even the best commercial pet foods are heat processed to death.

All of our systems (yours and your dog’s included) contain yeast in our gut tract. This yeast is kept in check by a healthy immune system and by the healthy flora of the gut tract. This yeast feeds on sugars (carbs/grains are converted to sugar by your body).

A dog’s diet should consist mainly of meat and meaty bones. This should be the main “ingredient” for optimum health. But, just read that dog food ingredient list. Even the “high quality” foods have an ingredient list that looks similar to this: Chicken meal, potato starch, turkey, peas, potatoes, tomato pomace, flax seed, whole carrots, alfalfa meal, etc.

And your dog’s immune system, kept on heat processed dog food or even an incorrect homemade diet, is NOT in great shape. So, the yeast goes NUTS!

Your dog may also have ear issues, stinky skin, weight issues. And, because a diet that is loaded with grains/carbs/fillers actually changes your pet’s pH, that paw licking (saliva) can cause the fur to actually turn pink. This is also true for dogs that have red, pink or brown eye/face staining as well.

Now that you understand why you dog licks his paws and that it’s NOT a “bad habit” or that your dog is not “bored”, you also can see that it’s time to examine his diet and fix the issue from the inside out.

I have seen suggestions online that include spraying your dog’s feet with cayenne pepper, putting socks on your dog, give your dog a bone to distract him,not the solution for Paw Lickingyell and scream at your dog. But if yeast is the culprit, then of course, none of these things will work!

It’s really as simple as beefing up your dog’s diet (literally) and adding Dinovite supplement. Give the changes up to 90 days to change your dog’s pH, to boost his immune system and to rid himself of yeast overgrowth.

Meaty Diet + Dinovite + 90 Days = Healthy Dog (No more Paw Licking!)

Israel Canaan Dog

Canaan Dogs are a distinct breed which has survived in the desert since Biblical times. Their name "Canaan Dog" identifies this breed as the dogs of the ancient inhabitants of Israel, the Canaanites, who lived some 3,000 years ago. Cave drawings dated to 2200 BC show dogs resembling the Kalef K'naani. It is said that even Queen Jezebel kept one of these fine dogs attached to her throne with a golden chain, and the Bedouins used these dogs for herding and guarding.

After the Israelites were wandering in the desert, they left behind these dogs, which soon became feral. Surviving on their own for hundreds of years, they developed through the selective breeding of the semi-wild Pariah dogs of the Middle East. A dog authority named Dr. Rudolphino Menzel from Germany decided to capture this breed and put it to use; she was asked to develop a dog for guarding the community settlement, or 'kibbutz'. In the 1930s, it took 6 months to capture the dogs, but once they were domesticated, training came easily. The dogs were prized for their intelligence and easy training abilities. Used to guard and protect livestock, they were also a messenger dog in the Israeli army. They were used often as sentry dogs and messenger dogs. Many were trained for mine detection during WWII, and some also served in the Red Cross. This breed entered the U.S. in 1965, and maintained AKC status in 1997.

The Canaan Dog is a medium-size, robustly made, spitz-type dog. They have been indigenous to the region encompassed by modern Israel for centuries. Canaan Dogs are reserved with strangers but makes a good companion dog that is loyal and affectionate to their family. Soft and eager to please, they also need to know the rules of the house or they can become manipulative. Canaan Dogs have been used as a guide dog for the blind and as a search and rescue dog. They are known to be aloof of people and animals that they don't know, and are known to run away when a large change affects them, such as a new house or new person. This is how they coped when they were feral dogs in Israel. But such characteristics can be overcome with training, as these are highly intelligent and trainable dogs. They are known for their service as messenger and sentry dogs, and were once trained to detect mines. They can be barky, which makes them excellent watch dogs. Their endurance, reactability, and agility make them a popular breed in Israel.

They are intelligent, resourceful, and easily trained. They can survive on their own, and sometimes try to when situations at home change. If they are confronted with a big change such as a different house or different people, they tend to bolt. They do not adapt well to new situations, and a fence is necessary. They are very obedient, alert and vigilant. They are wary of strangers, including children and animals, but devoted to their families and friends. They are protective and are not afraid of a fight. They are said to be a joy to watch as they play. They bark and will guard their humans as long as necessary.

The Israel Canaan Dog Is The Few Existing Breed

The Israel Canaan Dog is one of the few existing breeds of primitive dog, known for thousands of years, whose natural habitat is the present day state of Israel. These dogs have not changed since biblical times, and their biological characteristics are evidence of adaptation of semi-arid zones. The breed still exists in the wild and with the Bedouins of the area. Breeders in Israel continue to bring in new bloodlines from the wild, and are attempting to preserve the natural characteristics of these dogs, despite them now being a recognized breed that are being bred in many countries abroad. One of the major factors in the successful preservation of the breed is its growing popularity as a pure bred, registered pet.

The Canaan dog has existed as a dog, according to current theories, for as long as 150,000 years. There is some controversy over where the originating point of the first dog was, whether in one place or in several, and there is still a good deal of research being done on this question. But there is little doubt that one of the points of origin, and perhaps THE point of origin, of the dog was the Middle East. The prevalent belief also is that the breeds existing today that are called primitive dogs, pariah dogs, land races, or similar, are very close in their characteristics and type to the original dog that branched off in a different direction from that of the wolf so long ago.

The Canaan Dog of Israel is one of these original breeds, which we believe has existed as is for thousands of years. There are as many as forty references to dogs in the Bible and we learn that the dog was common and well known thousands of years ago. Dogs of those times were used as shepherds and guardians of the flocks and home. References make it clear that the dog was of great importance in alerting the community to the presence of strangers. Although many citations were derogatory, it is clear that the dog was an accepted and valued part of life in those times. One of the oldest archaeological findings showing the relationship between man and dog, dating from about 12000 years ago, was found in Israel in the Galilee at a place called Ein Malacha. This is the skeleton of a woman that was buried with her dog in her hand.

There is good reason to believe that the dog of Biblical times was the Canaan dog, the only breed truly native to the land of Canaan, the modern State of Israel. Evidence includes the tomb drawings of Bene Hassan (2200-2000 BCE) (1,8), and rock carvings, such as those found in Wadi Celoqua in Central Sinai, depictingCanaan-type dogs chasing an antelope (1st-3rd century CE) (G. Ilani, personal communication), and from Har Harif in the Negev desert depicting an ibex hunt. A clear bas-relief of a Canaan type dog has been found on a 2nd century CE sarcophagus dug up in Ashkelon, and presently in the local archaeological museum.

A fairly recent discovery that presents evidence of the importance of the dog and its uniformity in ancient times is the find of a huge dog cemetery in archaeological digs at ancient Ashkelon. This dates back to the fifth century BCE with over 700 dog skeletons found, including numerous puppies, adults and subadults. Each dogwas buried individually and with great care, reflecting a strong bond between dogs and humans. The ancient Phoenecians, the primary population of this area at this time, celebrated the dog and its healing powers, due to its habit of licking wounds, so these dogs may have been part of a temple healing ritual. The descriptionof the dogs by the archaeological team is as follows: "The mature Ashkelon dogs were a little over 20 inches high and weighed a little more than 30 pounds.". Wapnish and Hesse have found a modern counterpart in today's "Bedouin sheepdogs", known as Palestinian pariah dogs. Or, as we would call them, Canaan dogs.

The Canaan Dog is one of the small group of rare and disappearing breeds that are considered to be primitive dogs, and are often referred to as “pariah dogs” or "land races". The pariahs, that include ancient indigenous breeds found mostly in Asia and Africa, are of great interest for a number of reasons. They are in type the closest to the original dog, the dog that was the ancestor of all the modern breeds, and that may date back as much as 100,000 to 150,000 years. These are the breeds that have survived on their own, the only criteria for the breed’s continuance being its ability to survive in very difficult conditions. On the other hand, pariahs, in their life style and relation to man, are very similar to the first dogs ever domesticated, willing to develop a partnership with man but able to live on their own if necessary.

Dressing Up Your Dog

Dressing up your dog is a common and very popular thing to do these days. Many dog owners take great pride in having their dog look good. It is almost like a fashion statement, and it can be a fun experience to buy dog clothing, and make them look as cute as they can. These owners will go out of their way to make sure their dog look good and many see it as a reflection on them if their dog is not well attired.

It should not be hard to find dog clothing because there are lots of options and plenty of styles available. From adorable dog t-shirts, booties, cute sweaters, leads, to stylish collars. There are even different and very unique kinds of hats that you could buy for your dog. Some stores will even allow you to take you dog in for a fit, to make sure you are buying the right size.
The choices are endless so it boils down to what you think your dog looks good in and is comfortable wearing. Most dogs have no problem getting dressed up, especially if the clothes they are wearing do not restrict them in any way, and if they crave attention.

As your dog’s owner you have total freedom and control over what your dog wears. So choosing your dog’s outfitwill be entirely up to you. When choosing your dogs outfitkeep in mind your dogs own personality, make sure what you dress him up in is stylish, fashionable and brings out your dog’s personality.
So if you dog is the assertive type or the aggressive type maybe a dark colored costume will show off this trait. If he is an attention seeker, or a charmer then maybe a funcostume would suit him well.

It is possible find fashionable dog clothes online, as many websites offer what they believe to be the best outfits available on the Internet. From designer fashions to outrageous clothes you name it chances are you will find it. From dresses, pants, shorts, skirts, wedding gowns, to eye wear, it is all available to you.
Many of the designer clothes tend to be on the more expensive side so choose wisely and within your budget, it’s easy to overspend when shopping for your dog. These designer clothes, however tend to also be more stylish and their material of better quality than other clothes available. Be sure the store has a return policy just in case you are dissatisfied with something you have bought.
When buying dog clothes give attention to the season you are buying them for. You certainly do not want to by clothes made from thin cloth for your dog during winter. Get your dog warm clothes for winter and buy accordingly for the other seasons.

The Humane Society and the ASPCSA have put out a warning that some manufacturers of dog clothing have canine fur in their fashions. Be very mindful of this you do not want to encourage this kind of practice.

Dog Backpack Tip

A lot of people use back packs to increase the effectiveness of their daily walks.

High-energy dogs, nervous or anxious dogs and other dogs seems to respond to having a “job” (hauling around a backpack with some moderate weight in the packs). Plus, it uses up to three times the energy … a 15-minute walk has the impact of a 45-minuted walk with a backpack weighted appropriately.
But once people get their backpack, they wonder how to weight it appropriately. How much weight is enough? How much is too much? How do you get your dog used to a packpack and how do you gradually increase weight?

  • Put the backpack on without anything in the pockets at first. Let your dog get used to it. Go for 2-4 walks with the backpack empty.
  • If your dog is ignoring the backpack after 2-4 walks (many dogs even become eager to put it on once they connect the backpack to a walk), begin adding weight a little at a time. Go by the size of your dog. For our Irish Setter, I started with a 12-ounce bottle of water on each side. For a Cocker Spaniel, I would start with an orange or something of similar weight.
  • Be sure you have even weight on each side of the backpack.
  • Go for 2-4 walks with each weight before adding more. Keep the first walk with the new heavier weight short; don’t try to do a two-mile hike if you’ve just added weight.
  • Do not add more than 10% of your dog’s own weight to the backpacks. For a 25-lb dog, don’t add more than two and a half pounds total (a pound and a quarter on each side).
  • In the summertime, larger dogs can haul chilled bottles of water. This can help cool the dog.
  • Owners of small dogs sometimes use beans to add weight to their dogs’ packs. Beans conform to the dog’s body, making the load comfortable. Plus, you have good control over exactly how much weight you add, and can add more in small increments.

Travelling With Your Dog

If you like to travel to places far and wide, so do your dogs and all pets do. There are several things which has made your life simple, easy and fast these days. For traveling with your pets, several things have been developed to make the travel easy and comfortable so that both enjoy the place, you and your pets too.
To make your travel comfortable all big hotels and resorts are giving entry to the pets which are furry and lovable so that you can enjoy the company of your pets anywhere you go. Traveling with the pets is never a great fun as it is these days. It may give you little stress packing everything for the pet like a baby, but the pet won’t disturb you anymore while you are on a travel for a weekend. Rather it would be a great pass time to have spend some time with your beloved pet.

Even government is allowing pets at some specific gardens and restricted places, but what is to be paid is the cost of the ticket to enter the place. Next, certain care has to be taken while one is traveling with the pet to far and distant places. There are several tourist places which are indeed great to move along with your pets, and there are tourism industries which specifically specify if it is a place for your pets or not.

Several kinds of carriers are available to make the trip comfortable and to stop your pet move astray. These carriers are specially designed to fit your pets into it so that the trip becomes more comfortable and the pet doesn’t disturb you any more.

Several small trips can be taken with pets if one is free every morning or it can be planned in the weekends too. There are insurance companies which provide insurance for the pets too and they can be utilized if the pet gets hurt on the way while one is on the travel. Sea beaches, hill stations and other places are the ones where pets love to play in the open land and enjoy life to the fullest, which is not available these days in the clumsy places we live in. Generally, in the apartment houses, there is no much space for the pets to move and walk, so the open land is what they crave for.

If there is a park nearby, the pets can be taken there but in the hectic lives people don’t have time for the pets, so taking them out with oneself is the way where even they can relax and so do the pets. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, but at the same time all rest and no physical exercise for the pets makes them stagnant too.

The place of travel must be chosen with great care and caution as the pets should not be physically harmed in any manner. They need to enjoy life to the fullest without hampering their individual self. So hot water streams, or jungle areas where there would be wild animals to harm the pet should not be chosen while one wants to move to distant places with the pets.

Being Care of Your Dog's Eyes and Ears

The dogs are classified as a subspecies of the wolf. Dogs are valued most as a pet for their intelligence. The most important task for a dog keeper is to take required care of his dog. Two very important sense organs of a dog are eyes and ears, which also requires special care and attention. Present here are few tips to keep your dogs’ eyes and ears healthy. The eyes and ears of dog should be carefully cleaned everyday with a moist cotton balls or moist cloth. The whole procedure should be done gently, caring that the dog is not hurt while wiping. Do not scratch the cornea while wiping.

Severe irritation and discomfort can be caused by ear infections which are very common in dogs. Due to particular structure of their outer ears, dogs are more susceptible to ear infections than any other animals. Ear mites are small parasitic creatures that cause severe itching and inflammation. They can be easily seen with naked eyes and are highly contagious. Wash pet beds or blankets in warm water with soap. Eremites usually live inside the ears; they can also survive in the surrounding fur. It is important to discuss the best and sure treatment with your veterinarian for ear mites. This treatment should be followed up with your veterinarian to make sure that the treatment has completely cleared the eremites.

Eye shape, retina configuration and dimension of eye vary from breed to breed. Dogs with protruding eyesore less protected than breeds with eyes that are set deeper, and require most care. Excessive tears are seen in some dogs, the affected area should be kept dry. Use moisturizing eye drops for dogs that have dry eyes. Your veterinarian can help in detecting eye disease in the early stages where they can best be treated. Eye infections may become chronic if not treated and can cause permanent damage if neglected.

Hearing and viewing are the strongest senses of a dog and it is good to take care for them. Through a little knowledge and care, you can make your dog a healthy and happy part of your family.

All The Different Types Of Dogs

If you have been thinking of buying a new dog or maybe you already have a dog and have been thinking about getting a second one, you will know that there are so many different types of dogs available, that it can be a bit overwhelming. With the many different dog types out there, it can be really difficult deciding which dog breed would suit you, or your family and more importantly if you have children, whether a particular breed would be suitable around children.

The American Kennel Club recognizes several distinct dogs breeds as listed below.
Sporting Dogs
This dog breed is usually very alert and attentive. This makes them well likeable and overall they will have good character and personality. Popular breeds within this group are the Retrievers, Spaniels, Setters, Pointers and many more. Often very active dogs, potential owners should realize that they will need regular exercise.
Hound Dogs
A good proportion of the Hounds share an ancestry involved with hunting, often used by noblemen in times past. Many have an excellent sense of smell whilst others have a keen eye and good stamina. Amongst this group you may find Afghan hounds, Beagles etc. As with the Sporting dogs, these breeds will need plenty have room and exercise.
Working Dogs
This type of dog has been bred specifically to carry out tasks. Whether it's guarding sheep to pulling heavy loads on sleds, mountain rescue to water rescue duty, they were bred to work. Classic examples are the Doberman pinscher, Husky and the Great Dane. Usually intelligent animals that are easy to train and keen to learn. Due to their size, this dog breed may be unsuitable for small homes and young families.
Terriers
Typical examples of this breed are the West Highland Terrier and Airedale Terrier. Terriers have a 'typical' personality of being a very energetic type of dog with a feisty side as well. Bred to hunt and kill small animals such as vermin they need courage and cunning of which they have plenty. Being a small dog, these dogs make good pets that will keep any owner on their toes!
The Toy or Small Dog Breeds
The most popular dog in this group is the Chihuahua. Often popular with celebrities, this diminutive dog is ideal for people who live in small apartments and city areas. Upkeep and care is significantly lower for a larger dog, as are the grooming and exercise needs. Other varieties of dog in this group are the Pomeranian, Bichon Frise etc. Toy dogs often prove to be the perfect companion.
Non - Sporting Types

8 DIY doggie Halloween costumes

Cats loathe costumes but some dogs positively revel in dressing up for Halloween -- strap on a pair of fairy wings and they begin to strut their stuff. Dressing up your dachshund can get pretty pricey, however, without major sewing skills or a big budget. Here, finance expert Andrea Woroch shares a list of easy and frugal ideas to keep your pup happy come Oct. 31.

Octopus
This works best with taller dogs. Stuff pantyhose with a lightweight material, sew eight of them together in a cluster and pin to your dog's harness.
Chippendale dancer
Great for large dogs. Cut the collar and cuffs from a disposable white shirt and secure to your dog's neck and front paws. Create a bow tie out of a strip of black cloth. Encourage donations by tucking a few dollar bills into the collar. This works really well if you have a dog who likes to dance on his hind legs.
Little Red Riding Hood
A good costume for a small dog, this one is also easy on the sewing-impaired. Hit Jo-Ann Fabrics for a yard of red material with some structure to it, like felt or flannel, and a length of red ribbon. Cut the material into a hood and cape shape, then baste the ribbon to the neck of the hood.
Rapper pup
Let your streetwise hound exercise his vocals wearing a hoodie and gold medallions. Make the bling out of Yoplait yogurt lids and pick up a hoodie on the cheap side with a PetSmart coupon from sites like CouponSherpa.com.
Vampire
Those canine teeth will come in handy when your dog takes on the most popular costume of the decade. Simply cut a swath of black silk into a cape shape and attach it to the collar. If you have sewing skills or a glue gun, create a stand-up collar by attaching red silk to a cardboard frame.
Winged fairy
"Teacup"-size pups might be too tiny to handle wings, but a small dog should be able to pull off this low-cost outfit. Read how to create this look with directions from instructables.com.
Rescue dog
This one's a natural for St. Bernards, but even funnier on a smaller dog. Strap an empty beer or pop can to the collar and use a long piece of red felt to create a waistband painted with a white cross. For a humorous twist, larger dogs might be able to handle an empty coffee can instead of the expected brandy barrel.
Pillow camel
From all reports, dachshunds enjoy a bit of dress-up now and then. Turn your wiener dog into a camel by attaching an old sofa pillow in a caramel shade to a center harness. For a lumpier look, wrap a belt around the middle to give them two humps.

How to train your dog

You don't have to be the Dog Whisperer or even hire a professional trainer to have a well-trained dog. Dog training can be done on your own. Follow these simple steps on how to train your dog.

1.Start with the basics
While teaching your dog to skateboard sounds like such an awesome idea, you may want to back up a bit. Make a list of things you'd like your dog to be able to do on a daily basis (sit, stay, go potty outside and not on your new comforter, etc.). Then put those in order of importance and work on each accordingly. Once your dog has mastered simple tasks, you can move on to more complex training sessions.
2.Use simple commands
While you may find that "Could you please sit, Fido?" is a very polite request, your dog is likely very confused. Keep your commands short, simple and consistent. Cut the niceties and simply say, "Sit." This is a much easier command for your dog to learn and remember.
3.Use positive reinforcement-based reward system
Yelling -- or worse, hitting -- your dog is not an effective training tool. A positive reinforcement-based rewards training system is much more effective. And, duh, much less cruel. When training your dog, reward him each time he performs the command you've asked of him. You can use a yummy dog treat, a favorite toy or praise. Give the reward immediately after the dog performs the correct command.
4.Switch it up
Instead of repeating the same command over and over and over ad nauseam, switch it up. Work on one command for no more than 15 repetitions, then switch to working on a new or different command. You can come back to the initial command later in your training session.
5.Keep training sessions short
You know how you lose interest 15 minutes into your morning meeting? Your dog is the same way (except he doesn't have to sit through your morning meeting. Lucky!) The point is, dogs' attention spans are short, particularly puppies', and different breeds may take shorter or longer to train, so tailor your training sessions accordingly.
6.Have patience
You have to have patience when training a dog. Remember, he is learning and these things take time. Keep your training sessions consistent and don't give up. But if you are continually met with no progress after each training session, try another method or even another location or time of day. There are many variables that may make that particular setting/time difficult for your dog. If you feel you have exhausted your ability to train your dog, check out some training books or visit your local pet store to see about some group or private training sessions.
7.Make time for play
Don't consider your training session with your dog your only bonding time. Make specific time every day for walks, throwing him the ball or simply giving him a good belly rub. After all, they don't call him man's best friend for nothing.

People travel with their closest friend

Today many people travel with their closest friend...their dog. What lots of people have no idea is there are dog car seats. These nifty accessories might help make life easier when traveling together with your canine. For the smaller dogs that aren't quite large enough to look out the window and enjoy all of what it really way to be considered a dog, there are many dog child car seats available. You will find types that suit in between the bucket seats of cars and SUV's and even ones which have straps to adjust to the leading and back of the seats. Imagine being able to put your pet in the own little seat so he can keep an eye out the window while you drive. These neat little devices also provide an extremely comfy area for your dog while being easily washable and saving your seats in the dreaded dog hair. You will find booster seats available that provide an additional 7"-9" of height, along with a soft place to take it easy on the journey. For that bigger dogs you will find big seats as well. Many people use these larger seats for multiple dogs of promising small to medium size. There are a few things to know before choosing a dog child car seat:1. ComfortIf your dog isn't comfortable.....if the seat height isn't in the right level...your pet isn't going to wish to stay put. So ensure that you find out what your pet needs, may it be a booster or perhaps a seat that is adjustable. Also, if you are planning on the long trip, some dog child car seats provide a tray to hold food and water or any other toys or treats you may need.2. MaterialYour dog child car seat needs to clean easy and must breath. You are going to wish to prevent the car seat from being a breading ground for fleas in your car right? Search for material that will use the dryer and washer without any problems...or vacuum easy.3. Most important,....SAFETYDog child car seats offer a place for your pet to feel at ease while you are driving, which in turn reduces driver distractions. There'd be nothing worse than engaging in an accident from your dog running all over the car. There are even harnesses that you could and SHOULD buy and employ.. They are like seat belts for the dog. Make sure when you are picking out a dog child car seat you get one which has holes for a harness. Many people not just make their kids wear a seatbelt because of the law, they are doing it first for that safety of the child. I understand most people who own dogs consider them their children too.Do your homework and take some measurements of the dog before you purchase. You might also wish to search for patterns that will compliment your vehicle, today manufactures offer many different pattern styles. I would suggest looking online before going to the pet stores, you will get more variety.

Little Riggs

I am sad to let you all know that our little fighter Riggs lost his battle.
Not long after my last update on Riggs and the August Eight, we learned that the litter had suffered from distemper. Distemper is one of those easily prevented diseases that we don't see anymore in our area. Sadly, in poor areas dogs are not inoculated properly and so are able to contract and carry diseases. The August Eight contracted distemper somewhere in their journey to MABCR and once a young dog has contracted the disease there is little chance of survival.
Our vet helped little Riggs pass quietly after he had several seizures. Riggs, along with the rest of the pups, were loved and cared for in their short lives, and for this we are grateful.
Thank you so much for all of your kind notes, and financial support. Special thanks to the veterinarians that gave their time and experience and to the volunteers that helped care for the pups, most especially to Rigg's foster and her family who provided her with the emotional support she needed to work through this difficult experience.
